Doctoral Candidates

Nikolaos Antonopoulos
PhD Candidate – DC14
My name is Nikolaos Antonopoulos, and I was born in Kavala, Greece.
Since I was a child, I was inclined to natural sciences. My passion for chemistry and biology helped me excel in Greek National Exams and I was accepted into the department of Pharmacy of University of Patras, whence I graduated with a Master in Pharmacy.
During my studies, I became interested in advanced drug delivery systems, which led me to pursue a Master in Drug Discovery and Development with a specialization in pharmaceutical nanotechnology and analysis. For my master’s thesis, I developed liposomal formulations for co-encapsulation of antibiotics to fight MDR bacteria, such as MRSA. Additionally, I developed liposome-loaded dissolvable microneedles for ocular drug delivery, to achieve a more sustained release of the drug and consequently reduce the frequency of administration. I also used ex vivo models to assess the permeability of the formulations.
Furthermore, I have worked as formulation and analytical scientist in Greek pharmaceutical companies.
As a PhD student in SSBB project, I will develop different formulations of antimicrobial peptides and I will assess the impact of formulation process in antibacterial activity of AMPs. Finally, the pharmacokinetic profile of pulmonary delivered AMPs will be also determined.
